Establishing Multidisciplinary Pain Management and Training in the Developing World: The Southeast Asian Experience

Pongparadee Chaudakshetrin, MD, is formerly the Director of Multidisciplinary Pain Clinic at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. She is the founder of Siriraj International Fellowship Training program in Pain Management and Siriraj Clinical Training Center in Pain Management, Mahidol University in her native Thailand. She is founder and past President of the Thai Association for the Study of Pain (an IASP chapter).
She has been working to improve access to oral morphine since 1987, establish multidisciplinary pain services, and develop pain education curricula for students in Southeast Asia. In 2011, Dr. Chaudakshetrin organized the first IASP Pain Management Camp in Bangkok, Thailand, subsequently she was recognized with an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Pain Medicine by the Australia and New Zealand College of Anesthetists.
She serves on numerous IASP task forces, working groups, and committees. In 2012, she was rewarded Honorary member by the IASP in the recognition of her exceptional work in pain management services and education in Southeast Asia, as well as her dedication to IASP. She was described in nominating letters as having "a powerful and stimulating effect on the development of pain education and clinical services in her part of the world."
